Saia has named Gautam Bhat as VP of data and AI, a new leadership role, according to a news announcement this month.
He’ll be focused on “advancing the company’s enterprise data strategy and responsible use of AI across the business,” the announcement said.
“The opportunity to lead Data & AI here couldn't be more energizing as the LTL space is ripe for AI transformation,” Bhat said in a LinkedIn post.
The position entails supporting Saia’s efforts in modernization, scaling and long-term growth with technology.
Bhat’s AI and data experience includes executive positions with Graphic Packaging International, machine automation manufacturer ABB and various General Electric businesses, such as GE Energy Connections.
Saia President and CEO Frederick “Fritz” Holzgrefe noted recently on a Q1 earnings call that data analytics and optimization tools are a core part of the carrier’s strategy. “We'll continue to invest in those capabilities and expand the use of those tools,” he said.
Some $65.5 billion worth of annual work in the transportation sector is highly exposed to artificial intelligence, whereby the technology could augment workers’ productivity, according to a 2025 report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Transportation & Logistics.
